Tower of Power is a horn-based funk/soul band from Oakland, California. In the mid-1960s, 17-year-old tenor saxophonist Emilio Castillo moved from Detroit, Michigan, to Fremont, California. He started a band called the Motowns, specializing in soul music. In 1968, Castillo teamed up with baritone saxophonist Stephen "The Funky Doctor" Kupka and trumpet/trombone player Mic Gillette, moved to Oakland, and began writing original material. They changed the band's name to Tower of Power and began playing frequently in the Bay Area.

incredible to realize that I am now 73, and was blown down by this band when I was around 16 or seventeen years old , and recognize some of the same players. I still have memories of those wild and justifiably proud young men who knew they were an untouchable top frisco band and just ripped the place up.
Most people will not comprehend what they are seeing in this rhythmic interpretation of funk, gospel, soul and jazz. You are witnessing a combination of Sly Stone, James Brown & George Clinton with an Oakland sound that has never been duplicated. This is an otherworldly musical eargasm, close your eyes and enjoy, thank you Rocco and Dave for laying a foundation to inspire for years to come.🥁🙏🏾♥️
I am 82 and I am still moved by soul music, Used to play myself ... So nice to see these guys still at it,
Everybody singing, playing their instruments, no pitch correction or autotune. In any modern funk/soul band you can hear Tower of Power's influence. We always want the funk; keep giving up the funk.
I WILL BE 88 YEARS OLD IN MAY, 2025 - STILL LOVE THIS GROUP,
