The group originated in Gary, Indiana, in 1964, and initially consisted of brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, and Michael Jackson. They were managed by their father Joe Jackson. The group was among the first African American performers to gain a following across multiple musical genres. The Jackson 5 began performing in talent shows and clubs on the Chitlin' Circuit and signed with Steeltown Records in 1967

This performance is even more chilling when you learn that Michael’s father would wait off stage with a belt prepared to beat Michael if he made a small mistake. Michael often felt the safest on stage because his father couldn’t beat him in front of everyone. Truly heartbreaking he had to endure this. RIP!
